Optimize your fertility with naturopathic medicine

For many people hoping to conceive, the path to pregnancy is far more stressful and emotional than they ever imagined. What’s especially difficult is that most individuals or couples are told they must try for a full year before receiving a referral to a fertility specialist—and often, multiple miscarriages must occur before anyone will investigate why.

This “wait-and-see” approach can be an emotional rollercoaster filled with hope, disappointment, anxiety, and heartbreak.

You shouldn’t have to wait until you’re suffering to get answers. You deserve support early—before the emotional toll becomes overwhelming.

Naturopathic medicine offers a proactive, whole-person approach to fertility, helping you optimize your chances of getting pregnant sooner and supporting a healthy pregnancy once you do. If you'd like to get pregnant now or in the next few years, the perfect time to introduce support is now!

The Fertility Challenges You Want to Avoid

Fertility is influenced by a number of interconnected systems—hormones, nutrient status, inflammation, thyroid function, stress, and more. And don't forget that 50% of fertility challenges are due to male health factors. The good news is that taking a good look at your health before you want to get pregnant allows you to tackle potential obstacles early so you can hit the road running! Here are some of the most common (but often overlooked) factors that can make conception more difficult (for any body).

1) Hormone Imbalances

A variety of hormone challenges can interfere with fertility, including:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Low progesterone
  • Luteal phase defects
  • PCOS
  • High estrogen
  • Low sperm count
  • Poor sperm motility

There is so much we can do to help identify and resolve these issues––early, and before you even start trying to get pregnant. Some of the strategies available are:

  • Cycle tracking
  • Lab testing (hormones, nutrients, thyroid, blood sugar, inflammation, etc)
  • Sperm analysis
  • Herbal medicine
  • Lifestyle strategies
  • Nutrition
  • Targeted supplementation
  • Hormone therapy

2) Thyroid Dysfunction

Even “borderline” thyroid levels can interfere with ovulation and increase miscarriage risk. The standard reference range indicates thyroid is normal if TSH < 5.5. However, many people will experience thyroid problems if TSH is over 2.5. A detailed thyroid panel, including Free T3, Free T4, and thyroid antibodies can give you a lot more information than a TSH alone.

Naturopathic doctors can not only do a deep dive into your thyroid health, but we can also improve thyroid function through hormone replacement, nutritional support, herbal medicine, and lifestyle strategies. Optimizing thyroid function is a critical factor in prevention of pregnancy loss.

3) Chronic Stress

High stress can interfere with ovulation, progesterone production, implantation, blood sugar, and sperm quality.

Naturopathic medicine offers several strategies to assess stress, identify the effects of stress, and ultimately regulate the stress response, including:

  • Adrenal testing
  • Lifestyle interventions
  • Counselling
  • Herbal medicine
  • Hormone support
  • Individualized stress-reduction plans

4) Nutritional deficiencies

Common nutrient imbalances—such as low vitamin D, iron, zinc, B12, folate, and omega-3s—can affect both egg and sperm quality. For many of these, diet alone is often not sufficient to optimize levels, so supplementation may be needed.

Naturopathic doctors can offer comprehensive nutrient testing and personalized supplementation plans to optimize the foundation for fertility and pregnancy––while also ensuring you don't get too much of a good thing!

5) Inflammation and Imune Dysregulation

Inflammation can affect implantation, increase miscarriage risk, or contribute to conditions like endometriosis. Autoimmunity can also cause trouble for those wishing to becoming pregnant.

Naturopathic medicine is all about exploring the root causes of problems, and this includes exploring hidden causes of inflammation and autoimmune triggers. I have many tools to modulate autoimmunity and reduce inflammation, from lifestyle intervention, personalized diet recommendations, herbal medicine, pharmaceutical medicine, and more.

6) Digestive Issues & Microbiome Imbalances

Digestive issues can contribute to difficulty with fertility in a variety of ways, including inhibition of nutrient absorption, a disrupted microbiome, increased inflammation, and more.

If you have digestive issues, tackling these with naturopathic medicine before you wish to become pregnant can improve your overall health including parameters specific for pregnancy. I offer a variety of tests to get to the bottom of digestive health problems, and these are usually quite satisfying to treat!

7) Male Factor Fertility Issues

Male factors contribute to up to 50% of fertility challenges, yet often remain untested until late in the process. It takes two to tango! You don't have to wait so long! Naturopathic doctors can offer sperm analysis early on and work with males to optimize their lifestyle, nutrition, and hormones to optimize fertility. Furthermore, addressing factors like hormone imbalances, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, and environmental exposures can help improve fertility outcomes.

8) Environmental Toxins

Mold, heavy metals, plastics, pesticides, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals can all impact egg quality, sperm quality, hormones, and miscarriage risk. I offer a variety of tests that can help examine the burden of toxins that may be contributing to your health, as well as personalized detoxification support to address the problem.

Take Control of Your Fertility with TempDrop!

Fertility starts with knowing your cycle. Tracking your temperature each morning can help identify when you are ovulating as well as whether you may have adequate progesterone for pregnancy. Tracking in this way is also used for pregnancy prevention! However, forcing yourself to wake up and take your temperature each day manually can be annoying and ultimately disruptive.

Introducing TempDrop, the Fertility & Ovulation Tracker. This is a wearable thermometer you can sleep with that records your waking temperature automatically and syncs it up to an app automatically so you can rest in peace.
